How does the check-in system work?

You set regular check-ins—weekly on Starter, or up to daily on Premium and Legacy. If you miss consecutive check-ins, Inheritfy sends you reminders via email. On Premium and Legacy plans, trustees are notified and can verify your status. Documents are only released after the verification process completes. Each plan has a grace period (30-180 days) to prevent accidental releases.

What are trustees and do I need them?

Trustees are people you trust (family members, close friends, attorneys) who verify your status if you miss check-ins. They act as a safeguard against false triggers. Starter includes 1 trustee for basic verification, Premium allows up to 3 trustees, and Legacy allows up to 10 for maximum security and redundancy.

What encryption options are available?

All plans include two options: SSE (Server-Side Encryption) where we handle encryption for you, and CSE (Client-Side Encryption) where your data is encrypted in your browser before upload. CSE uses Shamir Secret Sharing to split your master key into 3 shares (browser, server, recovery phrase). Any 2 shares can reconstruct your key, giving you zero-knowledge privacy with multiple recovery paths.

Is this legally binding? Will it replace my will?

No. Inheritfy is a secure file delivery tool, not a legal service. It complements but does not replace legal documents like wills or trusts. Think of it as ensuring your loved ones can actually find and access the information they need, while proper legal estate planning should still be done with an attorney.

What happens if Inheritfy goes out of business?

Your data is always exportable. With SSE, you can download everything anytime. With CSE, you have your 24-word recovery phrase that can reconstruct your master key. Your browser also stores a local share for convenience. We maintain data portability so you can migrate if needed.

Who can see my documents?

Only you can access your documents while you're alive. Beneficiaries only gain access after verification of your passing. With client-side encryption (CSE), even Inheritfy staff cannot see your documents—we only store encrypted data and hold just 1 of 3 key shares.

Can I change beneficiaries or trustees later?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you have complete control. Add or remove beneficiaries, change trustees, update documents, or modify your verification settings anytime from your dashboard. Changes take effect immediately.

What happens if my payment fails?

We enter a grace period (30-180 days depending on your plan) where your account is suspended, but the critical safety features continue working. If you become unresponsive during the grace period, we still release your packages as configured—protecting your legacy is more important than payment status. You can reactivate anytime by updating your payment method.
